Play area incorporated in new Café

Brief:
To provide a safe, bright, engaging and fun children’s play environment for short term use (up to 45 minutes). The play area should attract children from toddler to school age so requires a diverse selection of interactive and physical play elements. The play area is to be situated in a super market aside a large cafeteria.

Key considerations

  • Hygiene - High levels of hygiene must be easy to maintain so all items must be easy to clean.
  • Space - The area is approximately 25 square metres located in a corner of a large space. It features low walls, sloping ceilings and large feature windows.
  • Age range - To provide a selection of activities for children aged between approximately 3 and 12 years old using a mix of elements.
  • Appearance - All surfaces introduced to the area should be attractive, and suitable for use within the venue - situated in close proximity to the cafeteria. The area should be bright, colourful and stimulating to ensure children feel like they have their own area within the venue in which they can play and enjoy themselves.

Customer Comments
On completion of the children’s play area the client reported the customer take up of the area had exceeded expectation. Not only did the solution successfully appeal to existing customers but within a week of the store opening, Booth’s catering manager reported clear evidence that the play area was attracting new customers to the supermarket.

The clearest increase came from young parents, who have become regularly users of the café and play area. This is best illustrated before and after the school run at each end of the day where parents meet in the area for an informal chat over a coffee. Combining the cafeteria and play area gives the parents the opportunity to relax while their younger children enjoy the play elements.

By incorporating a play area the client has found customers remain in the cafeteria for longer periods of time which increases the customer spend. In addition customers revisit the location with greater frequency than was previously evident.

In addition the larger business benefits as these customers are then more likely to also purchase any shopping they may require while in the store.
